I’ve encountered that before. The Teletouch system is quite finicky and there’s very few specialists left that really know how to work on it, so, when it goes, the cheap and easy solution is to bypass it.

Yeah, I figured that either the pushbutton electrics or the trans itself gave up the ghost, and this was the easiest fix, but it sure looks strange. The fix looks like it came from a 35 year old Fox body, and was jarring to see inside a ‘58 Edsel.

Its definitely the redneck way out. I guess the most elegant solution would have been to swap in a column shifter, but, at that point, just fix it right.
I mean, that’s one of the Edsel’s signature features. What’s the point of having an Edsel if you can’t show off the Teletouch Drive?

The car was otherwise decent looking, as long as you didn’t look too closely. More oddball stuff to come in a post shortly...

So what you’re saying is if I learn Teletouch repair I can charge even more than I already do to accept liability for working on somebody else’s car?
Like, how much we talking here? On a scale of “competent criminal defense attorney” to “Johnny Motherfuckin’ Cochran with the PR tour package.”

Probably. The amount of ‘58 Edsels on the road has to be in the four figures, right? Solid career.

That is pretty jarring.

The number of ‘58 Edsels still on the road is far higher than the number of cars I will work on professionally these days , probably lower than my hourly for complex hydraulic and electrical.
Hey, being a specialist comes with some benefits. Sort of.

Yea, I’m thinking that’s a pretty limited market though...

OK, so what do you work on then? M1oos? :)

See ranwhenparked’s comment - I was thinking that either the pushbutton system or the trans went south, and it was probably just too much of a PITA to fix it the right way.

Yeah, it’s pretty clear that wasn’t done for cosmetic flair.
